Bear with me while I share a story that I think will illustrate what I mean. I have been a “professional” writer, i.e., writing being my source of income, for about ten years. I am finally on the path to becoming a good writer. Before that I did a lot of writing as a part of other job duties. All toll I have invested nearly 40 years in becoming a good writer.
As a freelance writer producing and publishing my own products, I love that I can write about any topic I choose. This freedom to explore and write about topics of my own interests — my personal passions — keeps my mind alive and young, even as my body ages.
Make an editorial calendar, just like a magazine does. Block out time for the project of writing your book (don’t forget about the time you’ll save by not repeating yourself over and over to prospects!), and get outside help if you need it. But make sure you also incorporate time for social media into your editorial calendar. Plan it out: what to blog about, what to tweet about, and when. Know what to work on when you get up. And whether you’re blogging, tweeting, or using Facebook, it needs to be weekly. Make this a part of your calendar.
So you should find out what the writer’s area of expertise/specialization is – and then ask for something else. Yup, have the writer write on a topic she knows absolutely nothing about.
